Building a highly developed village by empowering the rural community through enhancing participation and self-confidence.

The Department of Rural Development, which has been operating under various ministries of the central government since 1948, became a provincial council subject through the 13th Amendment to the Constitution passed in 1987. With the establishment of the Central Provincial Council in 1988, the Provincial Rural Development Department has been operating under various provincial ministries and rural development programs have been continuously implemented. To date, the Central Provincial Rural Development Department is attached to the Provincial Ministry of Industries and is working to create sustainable villages built with its own strength while providing quality services to the rural community of the province.

For this purpose, we work to strengthen the rural development societies regulated by the department so that the rural community can develop their own strengths and participation, and through this, to develop high-quality infrastructure, livelihood development and social welfare projects. Furthermore, the Women's Development Centers under the department work to strengthen the department's vision of creating prosperous villages by empowering rural women with the aim of creating rural women entrepreneurs.

The Central Province has 2224 Grama Niladhari divisions. 2595 registered rural development societies and 38 regional rural development society boards (power boards) work to achieve the department's objectives.
